Velib – Paris

August 2nd, 2010

For the weekend in Paris I didn’t bring my bike. But hey, no problem because theres this thing called “velib”. For 1 Euro a day you can rent them. first half hour for free, after that 2 Euro per hour. The idea is, that you go from A to B, which is easy to ride in half an hour, you return your bike to a station and you get another from the station whenever you want. The 30 minutes rule is only, that the bikes are actually used for riding, and not getting locked up in front of a restaurant all day. And it is really impressive how many bike station there are around the city.

Now the bikes; yes they look terrible at first sight, but you get used to that. Also they have three pretty low gears, so you don’t get anywhere near fast riding. But as long as you’re bike is not your fashion statement or you’re train doesn’t leave in five minutes, they are great fun. And the fact that there are thousands of bikes to use by everyone is amazing. Also, you can ride a lot on very nice paths and the cars are more used to bicycles then in other cities it seemed.

I really hope that something like that can be found in every city one day!
